A New Player on the Blockchain – Samsung Joins the Game

by Arjun Agarwal

News has emerged that technology giant Samsung has plans for developing a blockchain-based smartphone. Much like other such businesses – HTC and Sirin Labs – the South-Korean firm is said to be making steps in the direction of having its own blockchain smartphone.

A few days ago Galaxy Club reported that Samsung had submitted three European trademark requests and their names are pretty straightforward - “Blockchain KeyStore,” “Blockchain key box,” and “Blockchain Core”. While the names are obviously related to the cryptocurrency field, the requests are for trademarks only. Even though the documents state that the TMs will be used for “Smartphones; Software applications for use with mobile devices; Computer software platforms; Application software”, there are no patents in the talks.

Samsung has already stated that its phones are amongst the safest devices for storing cryptocurrency. The submission of such requests may imply that the company has plans for the future development of a blockchain smartphone or implementing the technology in a built-in wallet. Rumors state the Galaxy S10 can be the first Samsung phone with cryptocurrency built in. For now, information is scarce and unconfirmed.

Despite Samsung’s own confidence in their products’ security and ability to store public keys and information, industry experts have disagreed. The future functionalities of Samsung remain to be seen.
