The malicious group behind the scam app is claiming to be EOS RIO, however, the Brazilian EOS developers' team announced that they have nothing to do with the app and their wallet app is yet to be published officially on Play Store for Android users.
SimplEOS, an app for storing EOS explicitly, has been launched both for PCs and Android devices, but EOS RIO’s claim was reviewed by Google, and the app was successfully unlisted in order to protect EOS users from a scam like this one.
Unfortunately, EOS RIO doesn’t have information about the number of times the app was downloaded and how many users have interacted with it. They are taking the opportunity to remind the EOS and crypto community that such malicious applications aim to obtain one’s username, password, and private key in order to steal their available digital funds.
Many users have been a victim of similar malicious acts. YouTubers, the Hogetwins, lost over $8,000 in crypto from a fake third-party EOS wallet on the Apple App Store. Apple removed the app from its platform shortly after the story gained momentum on social media.
EOS RIO ’s development team proposed to users to only download software from trusted developers or official outlets.
