The EOS Hackathon gathered some of the finest blockchain developers in London on the 22nd and 23rd September.

470 developers from 44 countries were challenged to create an application using the EOSIO platform. The app had to improve the privacy or security of the blockchain in order to strengthen the future development of the decentralized global society.

The contestants competed for the big prize of $500,000, as well as smaller awards of $100,000, $25,000, and $10,000. As an additional bonus, there was a $ 3,000 prize in the category's best design experience and best social media post.

The First place prize was won by EOS Shield – a tool for whitelisting transactions. The silver went to Chestnut which also earned the ‘Best user experience.‘ Chestnut is also a tool for whitelisting. The third-place prize was awarded to OnTheBlock – a tool that keeps identities and passport information on the EOS blockchain.

Besides the competitions, discussions were held on the future of EOS Nairobi and the growth of the EOS community in Africa. EOS Nairobi is ready to create a developer gateway and will also introduce the EOS Universal Basic Income into the continent.

Furthermore, EOS Botswana will support the education, the community, and the adoption of the EOS blockchain in Botswana.

As of now, EOS is one of the top platforms for blockchain app development and takes fifth place in the market cap ranking. Daniel Larimer, the co-founder of Block.one, is a supporter of the Universal Basic Income or UBI. He rebranded it to Universal Resource Inheritance (URI) because the idea is to provide everyone with an equal chance of opportunities.

URI is capable of reducing corruption and controlling the government and the rich who have access to minerals and land.

This year's EOS Hackathons were held in Sydney, Australia, and Hong Kong, China. From November 10-11, the event will happen in San Francisco as well.
