The National University of Malta has been working together with Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) to give a group of lucky candidates a $351,000 scholarship fund.

The scholarship is for a program in blockchain and distributed ledger technology.

The news was published by the Times of Malta on August 29. Only students specializing in law, finance, engineering, and ICT are eligible for the scholarship. Those who are starting their academic year now can apply and complete their Master‘s or Ph.D. degree with a blockchain and DLT research dissertation.

Silvio Schembri who is the Digital Economy Parliamentary Secretary thinks that the scholarship, will put Malta at the center of the map for blockchain companies and attract their attention. The blockchain-friendly island is equipped to provide all necessary human resources to them.

According to Dr. Schembri for the construction of a successful blockchain, companies need to hire experts in engineering, law, and financial services. Thanks to the fund, Maltese students can be appointed to important posts in the sector.

Prof. Vella ensures that the University would continue reviewing the programs to include studies related to DLT, blockchain, AI, cryptocurrencies, and fintech.

In July, Malta passed three bills to establish a regulatory framework for blockchain technology. The country is cryptocurrency-friendly and can legally assist blockchain startups. Malta‘s government strategy is to become a blockchain island.

Earlier this year, the Transport Minister secured a partnership with a U.K.-based blockchain called Omnitude. By implementing their technology, the government is looking for ways to improve the Maltese Public Transportation system.

Tony Sultana, MITA‘s executive chairman shared with the public that the agency is planning on doing similar initiatives with more educational institutions. Also, it is presenting training sessions for employees working in the public sector to help them understand blockchain technology.

In October 2018 the Delta Summit - a blockchain and digital innovation event, will be held in Malta. The main partner for the event is MITA.
