With just two weeks remaining, the 7th Annual Strategic Platform for iGaming Conference & Exhibition (SPiCE South Asia 2026) is preparing to welcome policymakers, operators, investors, and industry experts to Sri Lanka for three days of strategic dialogue and regional collaboration.

Exclusive Conversation: Chanaki Mallikarachchi
Chanaki Mallikarachchi, Director (Information & Communication Technology) at the Ministry of Digital Economy, will share her perspective on the role of digital infrastructure, innovation, and policy in supporting Sri Lanka’s broader economic transformation.
As the country continues to strengthen its digital capabilities and attract technology-driven investment, Mallikarachchi’s insights will explore how public sector leadership, emerging technologies, and cross-industry collaboration can contribute to sustainable growth across key sectors.
Reflecting on how digital transformation is shaping the country’s broader economic trajectory, Mallikarachchi explained:
“Digital transformation is a key driver of Sri Lanka’s future economic growth. By building strong Digital Public Infrastructure, digital government services, and data-driven systems, we can improve efficiency, reduce administrative barriers, and create a more transparent business environment. This transformation will also enable the growth of new sectors such as AI services, digital trade, fintech, and technology-driven industries, helping Sri Lanka transition toward a knowledge-based and innovation-led economy.”
Discussing the role of digital infrastructure in strengthening Sri Lanka’s attractiveness to investors and international visitors, she noted:
“A strong digital infrastructure is essential for attracting both tourism and international investment. Investors today expect efficient digital regulatory systems, online licensing processes, and transparent service delivery, which reduces the complexity of doing business.
For tourism, digital platforms can provide seamless services such as online visas, digital payments, and smart tourism information systems, enhancing the overall visitor experience and strengthening Sri Lanka’s global competitiveness.”
On the importance of technology in enabling transparent governance and responsible oversight in emerging sectors, Mallikarachchi observed:
“Technology enables governments to regulate emerging sectors in a more transparent and efficient manner. Digital systems allow regulators to implement data-driven oversight, automated compliance monitoring, and transparent licensing processes.
At the same time, as technologies such as AI and data-driven platforms evolve, governments must ensure responsible innovation through strong governance frameworks, ethical standards, and effective regulatory oversight.”
For Sri Lanka’s digital ecosystem to evolve at scale, Mallikarachchi underlined the value of strong partnerships between government and the private sector:
“Digital transformation requires strong collaboration between government and industry. The government provides the policy frameworks, infrastructure, and regulatory environment, while the private sector contributes innovation, expertise, and technological solutions.
Through public–private partnerships, innovation sandboxes, and GovTech collaborations, we can accelerate the development of digital solutions that support both economic growth and improved public services.”
Highlighting the importance of international platforms in connecting policy, investment, and innovation, Mallikarachchi commented:
“International platforms like SPiCE South Asia are very important because they bring together policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and innovators to discuss emerging opportunities and challenges.
These forums help strengthen regional cooperation, attract responsible investment, and share global best practices, while also positioning Sri Lanka as an emerging hub for digital innovation and technology-driven industries in South Asia.”
