The platform works with file sharing, which means that if a user wants to store a file on Storj, he has to divide it first into smaller parts. This has a significant advantage, because you send and recall shards of your file at the same time, which makes the transfer a lot faster; also no single entity holds your entire file, and you're the only p erson who knows where are located all parts of it.
The big difference in the ways Storj and torrents operate are: torrents publish the location of the shards publicly because they want everyone to be able to download them, while Storj's priority is safety a nd the uploader is the only person who knows where all the shards from their file are.
